Elizabeth Arden

2010 sees Elizabeth Arden celebrating 100 years of beauty.
 
Elizabeth Arden was born 31 December, 1884 (Florence Nightingale Graham) in Woodbridge, Canada.  In 1909 she moved to New York with her brother and got her first taste of the beauty industry at the Eleanor Adir's beauty salon where she learned facial treatments. 
 
After borrowing $6,000 from her brother to buy a stake in the Elizabeth Hubbard beauty shop she proved too headstrong for a partnership and took over the business.  It is believed she left the name Elizabeth to save the expense of having the whole sign re-made and then added the second name Arden from her favorite Alfred Tennyson poem, Enoch Arden.  From such a modest start, Elizabeth Arden was created and is today a world wide cosmetic empire.
